Internships at the IAEA

Internships at the IAEA

The purpose of the IAEA internship programme is to provide people studying toward a university degree or who have recently received a degree with the opportunity to gain practical work experience in line with their studies or interests, and expose them to the work of the Agency and the United Nations. At the same time, it  benefits the IAEA and its programmatic work to obtain the assistance of qualified students specialized in various professional fields.

The duration of internships is normally not less than three months and not more than one year. However, a minimum of one month is also accepted. Interns are subject to the authority of the Director General and must observe all applicable IAEA rules, regulations, instructions and procedures.

Details of the programme

To be eligible for the internship programme, applicants must be at least 20 years of age and have completed at least three years of full-time studies at a university or equivalent institution towards the completion of their first degree.

Individuals may apply up to one year after the completion of a bachelor’s, master’s, or doctorate degree. Applications submitted after that time will not be considered. Applicants must not have previously participated in the Agency’s internship programme.

A working (oral and written) knowledge of English is essential. Knowledge of other official IAEA languages (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, or Spanish) is an asset. Interns should be able to adapt to an international, multicultural and multilingual environment, have good communication skills and be able to work in a team.

Interns are selected from candidates whose study disciplines are relevant to the Agency’s work.

The IAEA provides a stipend of EUR 500 to interns who do not receive financial support from an institution, university or other source, and an additional EUR 500 is offered to interns who pay for his/her own accommodation to a non-family third party. The stipend is not a salary, but an allowance to assist with basic subsistence costs during the internship period.

Applying for an internship at the IAEA

Applicants must complete an online job application form for a specific internship opportunity, answering all mandatory questions. They must also include two signed letters of recommendation. Recommendation letters with electronic signatures are not acceptable.

Applicants who do not comply with these guidelines or do not meet the essential requirements for IAEA internships will not be considered.

Application status

The IAEA is unable to provide up-to-date information on the application status while the recruitment process is ongoing. All applications are carefully reviewed for the respective vacancies. Candidates can check their individual submission status by navigating as below:

1: Enter IAEAs Job Board (link)

2: Click on “My Jobpage” in the top bar

On the job page, you should be able to see the status of each of your application submissions and status of the vacancy notice.

In general, only selected candidates will be notified on the next steps of the recruitment process. All candidates should receive an update at the end of the process. On average, vacancies are processed approximately between six to nine months after the application deadline.
