Makerere College School is a co-educational government-aided O and A- level school founded in 1945 by Makerere University (then still a College of London University).

Location

It is located on Makerere University Campus, Kampala, adjacent to the College of Education and External Studies on Makerere Hill Road.

Establishment

The school started as a demonstration school where innovations in holistic quality teaching could be tried out and the best practices made accessible to other schools and teachers in the country. It started with an enrolment of 32 students; at the moment, its enrolment stands at 2393 with 1239 boys and 1159 girls.

The school is renowned for its student leadership program.

The school operates on two campuses (this started in 2015): An A’ Level Campus located in Mulawa – Kira Town Council, Wakiso District and the O’ Level Campus which is the main Campus, located on Makerere Hill, Kawempe Division – Kampala District.

O’ Level Section

O’ Level (a.k.a. Ordinary Level) is a four-year course at the end of which the students sit for national examinations in October/November i.e. the Uganda Certificate of Education Examinations [UCE] are conducted by the Uganda National Examinations Board [UNEB]. Students sit for a minimum of 8 and a maximum of 10 subjects.

A’ Level Section

A Level (a.k.a. Advanced Level) is a two-year course and at the end, the students sit for national examinations in November i.e. Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education Examinations [UACE] are conducted by UNEB. Students take three principal subjects and either General Paper, Sub Mathematics or Computer Studies at the subsidiary level.
