Nabisunsa Girls Secondary School – Kampala

By | February 6, 2024

Nabisunsa Girls’ Secondary School is a Muslim-founded girl’s school in Kampala District headed by a Muslim headmistress. It holds classes from senior one through to senior six. The school is one of the oldest girls’ schools and topmost performing in the “Ordinary” and “Advanced” levels in Uganda. The student population of this middle-class girls’ school is 1150 with a teaching staff of 70 (34 female, 36 male).

The school was founded on a 10-acre piece of land in Banda offered to Kakungulu by the colonial government in exchange for a plot in Nakawa (present-day Uganda Revenue Authority offices) where the Nakawa mosque and the place of Mutesa I’s conversion to Islam were located. The government would use the Nakawa land to construct a World War Veterans’ camp.

In the hearts of its founders, it was meant to be the best Girls’ School in the country and since its inception until about 1969, it was headed by British Expatriate Headmistresses. Being a Muslim-founded school it was emphasized that girls should take pride in their religion and be examples of Good Educated Muslim Women, with the value of the fear of Allah. That everything possible had to be done to achieve that status.

There had been great fear that the few Muslim girls who had joined the church schools had and were converting to other religions. That said right from when the school opened it registered many girls from other religious denominations. Over the years Nabisunsa has lived up to the dreams of the founders. Many prominent figures in this country have been nurtured by this great institution.

Prince Badru named the school after his grandmother Omuzaana Nabisunsa, the mother of the Late Prince Noah Mbogo, a devoted Muslim.
