UNEB Releases Busia’s PLE Exams Results

Headteachers, parents and candidates who sat for Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE) in Busia District last year are breathing a sigh of relief after Uganda National Examinations Board (Uneb) released their results.

By Friday, only four of the 117 government-aided schools in the district had their PLE results available on the Uneb portal. The rest had been blocked by the examinations body for non-payment of Shs30,000 by each of the schools.

“We have received the PLE results and I have already downloaded (results) for 104 of the 117 schools; we hope all schools will have their results ready before the close of the day (yesterday),” Mr Kenneth Menya, the district inspector of schools, said.

Mr Menya said whereas the examinations body had released the results, many head teachers had not complied to remit money for corrections and record books for candidates’ performance.

He also attributed the delay by the district to access the results to “technical glitches” at Uneb.
Each school was required to pay Shs30,000 for the PLE report book and another Shs50,000 for each of the corrections made by the examination body after the registration of the candidates, which most of the schools had not done.

Mr Gabriel Barasa Makanga, the district education officer, said they had started analysing the results to establish the general performance, which should be made available to the various stakeholders this week.
Mr Stephen Mugeni Wasike, the district chairperson, said he was equally relieved, adding that he had received several calls from parents demanding an explanation why their children’s results had not been released.

“Some people were telling me to resign from office, but I’m relieved that the District has now received all the results,” Mr Mugeni said.

He said he had looked at the results and noticed a general improvement in performance in most schools.
Several head teachers were on Friday forced to flee their workstations following pressure from parents over delayed results for 7,089 candidates.
