Makerere University Vice Chancellor Prof Branabus Nawangwe has revealed that in academic year 2020/2021, undergraduate admissions will reduce by 1200 to increase the university’s research capacity.
According to Nawangwe, the university currently admits around 12,000 students annually.
“We are cutting down the undergraduate admissions by 1,200 because we want to raise the number of students on graduate programmes,” he said.
He revealed that the number of graduate admissions annually is 6,000 and they would want to increase it to 10,000 students.
The development comes at a time when the University Secretary Yusuf Kirunda revealed that the university thought it was generating high revenue due to the high number of student admissions which he says only overstretches its resources.
However, Prof Nawangwe noted that the university has adequate resources to cater for students.
“We want to increase the number of students studying online,” he explained.
Makerere University has so far extended deadlines for application for admission twice due to the coronavirus pandemic.
On April 17 (which was the initial deadline) extended the deadline for 30 days until May 17 and May 22, the deadline was extended to June 12, 2020 for both graduate and undergraduate programs.
