Virika school of Nursing and Midwifery

Virika School of Nursing is a Private Not for Profit (PNFP) Health Training Institution (HTI). It is under the training department of Holy Family Virika Hospital owned by Fort Portal Catholic Diocese. The HTI is currently training students of Diploma in Midwifery (Extension), Certificate in Nursing and Certificate in Midwifery. Virika School of Nursing started in 1964 by the Medical Mission Sisters. It is a PNFP owned by the catholic diocese of Fort Portal. It is situated on Virika Hill, Fort Portal Municipality, in Kabarole district 3km along Fort Portal/Kasese road

Courses Offered

  1. Diploma course in Midwifery (Extension) for 1½ years. This course is targeting EM and ECN.
  2. Certificate in General Nursing is for 2½ years. Those who join must have the minimum requirement of ‘O’Level certificate and having passed Mathematics, English, Biology, Chemistry and Physics.
  3. Certificate in Midwifery is also for 2½ years with the same requirements like the Certificate Nursing above.

The school has a functional Board committee responsible for discipline of students and staff plus other issues as they arise. The Principal Tutor is a member of the School Board Committee and the Hospital Management team which sits regularly to ensure smooth running of the day-to-day activities of the HTI. The school and hospital staff works together to instruct, guide, assess and instill professional conduct in the students.

2 Local Meals are provided like Posho, Matooke, and Beans e.t.c.
3 All the courses require practicum in health Centers and in the Hospital
3 At the end of the Course State Examination conducted by Uganda Nurses and Midwives Examination Board (UNMEB) is done.
4 The Successful Candidates register with Uganda Nurses and Midwifery Council for them to start practicing.

Admission Requirement
