MakCHS: 2021 CALL FOR EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST TO HOST 3RD INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON COMMUNITY HEALTH WORKERS
The Health Systems Global (HSG) Supporting and Strengthening The Role of Community Health Workers in Health System Development Thematic Working Group is calling for expressions of interest for organizing and hosting the 3rd International Symposium on Community Health Workers (CHWs) to be held in 2021. The initial symposium, hosted by Makerere University School of Public Health, Uganda and Nottingham Trent University, UK and held in Kampala, Uganda in February 2017, was the first of its kind. The theme of this symposium was ‘Contribution of Community Health Workers in attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals’, and attended by over 450 delegates from 22 countries around the world. The second symposium, hosted by International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh (icddr,b) will be held in Dhaka, Bangladesh from 22nd to 24th November 2019. This symposium, with the theme ‘Potentials of Community Health Workers in Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) in the Context of Universal Health Coverage (UHC)’, is expected to be attended by over 500 participants from around the world.
These symposia bring together various stakeholders including researchers, practitioners, policy makers, academics, donors, civil society, students and CHWs. The symposia also provide a platform for sharing evidence, facilitate interdisciplinary research, enhance collaboration, and offer networking opportunities.
The 3rd symposium will be organized by the successful applicant. Collaborating partners may include, but are not limited to, Supporting and Strengthening The Role of Community Health Workers in Health System Development Thematic Working Group, Healthcare Information for All (HIFA), CHW Central, as well as the organizers of the 1st and 2nd symposia who will share information and experiences about the previous events. The successful applicant will work with these and other partners to develop a concept note to facilitate fundraising for the symposium.
Host organizations will benefit from an elevated international profile, improved local and international links for future collaboration, increased publicity of in-country CHW work, and a recognized contribution to the development of CHW programmes globally.
We encourage any interested institutions with active CHW programmes particularly from low- and middle-income countries to apply.
Expressions of interest should include the following:
- Name of the host institution(s)
- City and country where symposium is proposed to be held
- Name and position of primary contact
- Tentative dates for the symposium
- Proposed venue for the symposium
- A brief statement highlighting the reasons why the institution(s) and country would wish to host the symposium, as well as their fundraising capacity (maximum 1,000 words)
