NORPART Call For Applications For PhD Student Mobility T6o Norway 2019/2020

Collaborative Action for Strengthening Training Capacities in Climate Risk and Natural Resource Management (CoSTClim)

Uganda Martyrs University in collaboration with Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), Makerere University (UMU) and Regional Universities Forum (for Capacity Building in Agriculture(RUFORUM) are implementing a five-year CoSTClimproject (Collaborative Action for Strengthening Training Capacities in Climate Risk and Natural Resource Management).The main goal of the project is to improve the quality of training, education, and research at the partner institutions with a dedicated focus on climate risk, disaster risk management, and natural resource management. CoSTClim builds on a range of other capacity development projects funded by the Norwegian Government at the partner institutions but is more focused on education.

One of the components of CoSTClim is staff and student exchanges through mobilities in both directions i.e. (a) Uganda to Norway and (b) Norway to Uganda. The student mobilities will involve both Masters and Ph.D. registered and progressing well at the partner’s institutions, pursuing programs or research which strongly rhymes with the project theme.

At this time, we are inviting applicants from Uganda Martyrs University for Ph.D. student mobility to Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) for the 2019/2020 academic year. The project will provide funds to successful applicants for a 5-month stay at NTNU in Trondheim, Norway. It is envisaged that the successful students will leverage the time at NTNU to advance their progress on the Ph.D. program they are enrolled in. Clear outputs, benefits, and outcomes from the mobility should be well articulated by the applicants. Potential applicants are encouraged to familiarize with the resources including staff and research focal areas at the collaborating department at NTNU (https://www.ntnu.edu/geography). The main supervision responsibility for the Ph.D. students will remain with the supervisors at UMU, but NTNU scholars will provide some complementary supervision, mentorship or assistance towards a publication. The Ph.D. students will also get the opportunity to participate in other academic activities at NTNU.

Eligibility

  1. The applicant should be a fully registered student on the Ph.D. in Agroecology and Food Systems program at UMU
  2. The applicant should have submitted an approved research proposal and is at the stage of writing his/her dissertation.
  3. The focus of the research of the applicant should align strongly to climate risk or disaster risk management or natural resource management.

Application procedure

Interested and eligible Ph.D. students should send the following;

  1. A one-page application letter
  2. A motivation statement and plan for the time at NTNU (2 pages maximum)
  3. A concept note detailing the research and progress registered (5 pages maximum)
  4. Progress report of the study program and evidence of full registration
  5. A brief CV (2 pages) and a copy of the masters’ transcript

Shortlisted applicants will be invited to complete educational procedures at NTNU under the exchange arrangement. A scholarship award will be issued once formalities have been successfully completed at NTNU.

Beginning of the mobility and scope of the scholarship

The selection process and acceptance at NTNU are expected to be completed by 1st October. This will give adequate time for preparation including accommodation arrangements and visa/residence permit processing. Successful applicants are expected to begin their tenure at NTNU in January 2020, spending a maximum of 5 months. The scholarships will cover:

  1. One return air ticket to Trondheim
  2. Monthly stipend of 17 000 NOK for 5 months. The stipend is intended to cater for accommodation and living expenses while in Norway.
  3. Visa/residence permit costs
  4. Travel and Health Insurance
