Organizational Setting 

The FAO Representation in Uganda provides technical assistance to the Government of Uganda in the agriculture, forestry, fisheries and related sectors. The Agro-Pastoral –Farmer Field School Officer will support the planning, implementation and monitoring of GCP/UGA/043/LDF project entitled “Integrating climate resilience into agricultural and pastoral production in Uganda, through a Farmer/Agro-pastoralist Field School Approach” funded by the Global Environment Facility. This project aims to build climate resilience into the agricultural sector, as an effective means of reducing vulnerability and disseminating community-level adaptation measures

Reporting Lines

Under the overall supervision of the FAO Representative in Uganda in collaboration with the Deputy FAO Representative and Team Leader Climate Change Program, the Agro-Pastoral and Farmer Field School Specialist reports directly to the National Project Coordinator (NPC).

Technical Focus

The Agro-Pastoral and Farmer Field School Specialist will be responsible for all agro-pastoral and farmer field school related activities of the project.

Tasks and responsibilities

The Agro-Pastoral and Farmer Field School Specialist will be responsible for the following:

  • Oversee the implementation of all agro-pastoral (AP) and farmer field school (FFS)activities in the 13 districts of intervention;
  • Oversee and coordinate with Digital Green on the integrated of an Information, Communication and Technology system within the AP and FFS;
  • Oversee the implementation of Component 2 – “Dissemination and farmer testing/ application of gender responsive climate-change resilient agricultural practices through Agro-Pastoral/ Farmer Field Schools (AP/FFS)” and in particular: the development of training material for master trainers and facilitators, trainings and AP/FFS implementations;
  • Oversee and monitor all AP/FFS activities;
  • Oversee and monitor the establishment of investment pilots based on the results of natural resources, agrarian systems, ,land uses and agrobiodiversity assessment as well as on existing infrastructure that require rehabilitation;
  • Oversee and monitor the development of sustainable value chains;
  • Ensure collaboration with other AP/FFS initiatives in Uganda;
  • Gather lessons learned and best practices from the project AP/FFS;
  • In close collaboration with the gender specialist from the Technical Management Unit (TMU), oversee and monitor the Gender Action Learning Systems (GALS) process;
  • Monitor the Free Prior Informed Consent (FPIC) agreement, the collection of lessons learned and the preparation of interim and final reports
CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING     
Minimum Requirements Higher degree related to agriculture and natural resources management;At least 3-year experience in working on agricultural or natural management issues;Working knowledge of English

  • Strong knowledge of Climate Change Adaptation (CCA) and Sustainable Land Management (SLM) in the Uganda context;
  • Previous experience in providing training to local communities;
  • Good knowledge of the AP/FFS system; and
  • Good knowledge of gender issues.
