What are Letters Of Administration?

Letters of Administration are granted by a Surrogate Court or probate registry to appoint

appropriate people to deal with a deceased person’s estate where the property will pass under Intestacy Rules or where there are no executors living having been validly appointed under the deceased’s will.

Requirements For Letters Of Administration In Uganda

A Death Certificate(NIRA) and post-mortem report(Hospital)

List of children/beneficiaries of the estate of the deceased and their ages

Place/ address of the deceased by the time of death

Estimate the value of the estate

Relationship between the Applicant and the deceased and their ID

Letter from the LCI Officials of the place where the deceased was buried

Introduction Letter from Applicant’s LCI

Passport photos of the Applicant

Certified copies of Minutes of the family meeting where the Applicant is selected to make the Application/ Family Resolution

How long does it take to apply for letters of administration in Uganda?

How much does a letter of administration cost in Uganda?

When filing the petition in court, the requisite filing fees (UGX 6,000) must be paid in the bank, and evidence of payment attached to the petition.

Who can apply for letters of administration in Uganda?

 Any person of the age of twenty-one years or above who is also of sound mind and is related to the deceased either by blood or by marriage.
