What are Beans?

A bean is the seed of several plants in the family Fabaceae, which are used as vegetables for human or animal food.

They can be cooked in many different ways, including boiling, frying, and baking, and are used in many traditional dishes throughout the world.

Price of Beans in Uganda

In Kampala produce markets there was an increase in all beans market prices particularly Large Nambale from Ugx.1700-1800/kg to Ugx.1900-2000/kg wholesale price.

Short Nambale beans increased from the previous week’s price of Ugx.2000/kg to Ugx.2100-2200/kg wholesale.

Yellow beans price also increased from Ugx.2000-2100/kg to Ugx.2300/kg. Other varieties were offered higher such as mixed beans at Ugx.1300-1400/kg, Kanyebwa beans at Ugx.2000/kg, Kahura/Rosecoco esp. from Mbarara at Ugx.1800-1900/kg. Sugar beans from Kisoro cost Ugx.2500/kg.

A lot of supply was delivered to the market in search of school fees. The bean harvest enrolled earlier and stocks are still held by the rural stockists.

An estimated 700Mt of assorted bean varieties were delivered to the Busia Produce border market daily.

Yellow beans were purchased at Ugx.2279-2402/kg (Ksh.74-78), Short Nambale at Ugx.1817-1878/kg (Ksh59-61), mixed beans at Ugx.1509-1601/kg (Ksh.49-52), small mixed beans at Ugx.1293-1447/Kg (Ksh.42-47), Rosecoco beans at Ugx.1663/kg (Ksh.54), Wailimu beans at Ugx.1509/kg (Ksh.49) and sugar beans at Ugx.2772/kg (Ksh.90).

How many bags of beans per acre are in Uganda?

Fresh pod beans are becoming a popular source of protein among urban dwellers in Uganda. They are considered highly nutritious and cook faster compared to dry beans.

Depending on the variety planted, the expected yield is between 100 -150 bags per season from a two-acre piece of land.
