Makerere University School of Psychology

Makerere University attempted to create an Institute of Psychology as a single common home for psychology teaching and practice in 1973. The first location was the School of Education under Professor Durojaiye in 1975 but remained a department. A new site was proposed in 1987 when the School of Education was planned to move to Kyambogo.

The idea of Psychology becoming an institute was revived in 1990 and achieved in 1997 but became operational in 1999. In 2011 Psychology become a school.

The desire has always been to create an environment for nurturing consensus on “professionalizing” psychology in the nation, in the sub region and region. This is because the need for psychological services is on the increase in the country and in the region, the School has three departments;

  1. The department of Mental Health and Community Psychology,
  2. The department of Social and Organizational Psychology, and the Outreach Department.

Courses Offered

It has two undergraduate programmes (Bachelor of Industrial & Organisational Psychology, and Bachelor of Community Psychology), a postgraduate diploma in Counseling, and three masters programmes (Master of Arts in Counseling, Master of Organisational Psychology, and Master of Science in Clinical psychology)
