What is Divorce?

Divorce is the process of terminating a marriage or marital union. Divorce usually entails the canceling or reorganizing of the legal duties and responsibilities of marriage,

thus dissolving the bonds of matrimony between a married couple under the rule of law of the particular country or state.

Below is how divorce is done in Uganda

Filing of supporting documentation regarding finances and children,

A summons is issued to both parties,

A response to the petition is made by the respondent in the proceedings,

Mediation.

Court hearing.

Issuing of decree nisi.

Issuing of the decree absolute.

How much does it cost to divorce in Uganda?

The requisite filing fees for filling a petition (UGX 6,000) must be paid in the bank and evidence of payment attached to the petition.

How long does Divorce take In Uganda?

After the lapse of six months from the date on which the decree Nisi is issued,

the petitioner then applies for the grant of a Decree Absolute which will completely dissolve the marriage.

Can we married while divorce is in process in Uganda?

Absolutely NOT. Till the time your Divorce proceedings are pending in Court, whether its Contested or Mutual Consent Divorce, you cannot legally marry another person.

As a matter of fact, you cannot marry again till the expiry of 6 months from the date of Divorce.

How long after divorce can you remarry?

Once you have received your Decree Absolute confirming your divorce, you can remarry immediately. There is no waiting period before getting married again.

It’s important that you make sure your divorce has been finalized before you marry again.
