KAMPALA – The Ministry of Education and Sports has released a list of 610 students who have been selected for the second lot of the Students Loan Scheme for the current financial year (2021/22).

The Minister of State for Primary Education, Joyce Moriku, released the list of the beneficiaries on Tuesday (February 8).

She said the education ministry would undertake all possible measures to ensure that enrollment in higher institutions of learning for students from poor backgrounds increases.

Moriku hailed the Higher Education Students Financing Board for ensuring that the number of students with disabilities that benefit from the scheme has grown to 89.

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, the minister revealed that they have submitted to the finance ministry a request for the budget for the Students Loan Scheme to be increased so that more students can benefit.

The scheme is currently allocated sh6b.

One concern is that many eligible students who apply are left out because of the limited budget.

Moriku clarified that since there was a first lot list of 910 beneficiaries that was released recently, it means the total number of beneficiaries from the scheme for the 2021/2022 financial year is 1,530 students.

Of these, 1,149 are undergraduate degree students while 381 are undergraduate diploma students.

The minister said that whereas out of the 6,023 students who applied 873 students were eligible, they selected 1,530 students.
