KAMPALA —Uganda’s biggest and oldest university, Makerere University has revised its academic calendar, adjusting major events including semester period and duration, holidays and recess term.

President Museveni recently gave the institutions the green light to reopen after weeks of speculation on when the learning facilities would be allowed to resume. He, however, directed that the staff be vaccinated.

Makerere now moves to reopen after a nearly five-month hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which affected the academic calendar.

The revised calendar was approved by the university senate in a special sitting held on Friday last week.

Information issued by the academic registrar’s office shows that finalists and graduate students will report on Monday, November 1, 2021 to attend physical lectures for two weeks ending on November 13, 2021. The group will sit for exams for two weeks from 15th to 27th November 2021.

The Academic Registrar’s says applicants from the first year students will also report for studies on Monday, November 1, for four (4) weeks of physical teaching from 1st to 27th November 2021.

The first year students will be put on Open & Distance Learning (ODEL) of mode of teaching from November 29, to December 24 2021.

The Academic Registrar says second year and all other continuing students will be on Open & Distance Learning mode of teaching and learning from Monday, November 1 to November 27, 2021.

The same group —second year and all other continuing students will now report on campus for 4 weeks from November 27 to December 24 2021 of physical teaching and learning.

According to the programme, first Year and all continuing students will sit examinations for two weeks from January 3 2022 to January 15 2022.

The University has set a recess term of 2 weeks from November 29 2021 to 11th December 2021 for Group 1 and Group 2 (Medical and Health Sciences, Finalists and Graduate students).

Recess Term of 2 weeks from January 17 to 29th January 29 2022 has been reserved for
Group 3 (First Year and all continuing students).

Academic Units and faculty members were advised to make all preparations to update teaching and learning materials on the Makerere University E-Learning Environment (MUELE), which is run by the university’s E-learning department under the College of Education and External Studies.

“The purpose of this communication is to inform you about the decision of Senate. The detailed Semester calendar will be sent in due course,” the academic registrar had earlier stated.

Masikye said the Senate also deliberated on alternative modalities of assessment/examination to enable students who were affected by the second Lockdown against Covid-19 pandemic complete Semester I 2020/2021.

Makerere University spokesperson Ritah Namisango said August intake (Freshers) are not reporting now.

“The University will communicate in due course the right dates when the Freshers are to report,” she said, adding that the Academic Calendar is for students who are already enrolled and studying at Makerere University.
