SOROTI – Soroti University of Science and Technology is to enroll students for a newly accredited course for bachelors of science in electronics and computer engineering.
The National Council of Higher Education (NCHE) approved the third course and authorized the University to start with only 40 students.
The first two courses that the university started with last year included bachelors of medicine and bachelors of nursing. Nearly 100 students were admitted.
“We got a green light from the Council in September to start bachelors of science in electronics and computer engineering. This is after their inspection to the university to ascertain our capacity to handle that course,” said the University spokesman Juma Hassan Nyene.
Like other learning institutions, Soroti University is also closed since March due to the coronavirus pandemic that brought the education section and other sectors to a halt.
However, President Yoweri Museveni recently allowed the universities to open for finalist students in October but Soroti University had no finalist students except for the students who were set to go for internship.
“Since we are few, we are hopeful that we shall also be allowed to bring back our students so that we can send them for internship. We have spacious lecture rooms to facilitate our students to observe social distancing,” Nyene said.
Three other courses in the pipeline for opening according to Nyene include bachelors in Science, education, and mechanical engineering. They will open once NCHE gives them a green light.
