Heritage International School is an international, Christian school located in Kansanga, Kampala, Uganda serving students from Early Years up to Grade 12. We are accredited by the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI) and the Middle States Association (MSA).
Academics at Heritage
Our style of teaching and learning is made up of the best practice from a number of different systems. Regular testing is used to best inform the students and parents how well concepts have been grasped. Our motivation at all times is to ensure that students, teachers and parents are all aware of the student’s progress in the class.
Teachers are approachable and welcome questions and discussion. Teachers also value interaction with students both in and out of the classroom setting. Both students and staff are expected to achieve their full potential.
Our school year begins in mid August and ends in late May with one major break at Christmas and two smaller ones in October and March. The school year is structured into two semesters, semester 1 beginning in August and semester 2 begining in January. This structure allows students to join HIS at two points in the year without falling behind in academic courses. Classes meet five days a week with chapel times on Wednesday for Middle and High Schools and Fridays for Kindergarten through 5th Grade. The typical school day begins at 8:00AM and ends at 3:00 PM for grades K to 12 classes, and 8:00AM to 11:45PM for Early Years classes. Extracurricular activities begin after classes at 3:00PM. Teachers are also present outside of class times to provide extra help when needed.
Some of the academic features of HIS are:
Low Student/Teacher Ratio
We are able to give individual attention to each child thanks to our small classes. The teacher/student ratio is currently 1:10 for elementary and 1:4 for Early Years.
Parent Involvement
Heritage works together with the home and family. Each family is asked to volunteer at the school in the spirit of family and community. This volunteerism is one reason we are able to offer low school fees for the children.
Wide Subject Variety
Heritage offers various courses in science, math, social studies, language arts, physical education, music, computers, art, swimming, and, of course, Bible.
Loving and Well-qualified Teachers
Heritage International School is very fortunate to have been blessed with a tremendously dedicated faculty. The teachers come from all corners of the world to contribute to the mission of Heritage.
Home School Link
Heritage provides a link with home school families throughout Uganda, giving them access to teachers and school resources (e.g. art, computer, PE, library, music, etc.)
English as a Second Language (ESL)
We provide special tutoring sessions for children who are learning English as a second language.
Accreditation
Heritage International School is accredited by the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI) and the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools (MSA). It is also registered and licensed with the Ministry of Education at both Elementary and Secondary levels.

Early Childhood Education
Our Early Years Program is a quality Christ-centered program that provides a safe and secure environment both physically and emotionally, meeting international standards. The program focuses on a Learning Center approach. It is founded on the Early Years Foundation Stage philosophy, developed in the UK. This approach encourages exploration, experimentation, curiosity, and a sense of wonderment. Teaching critical thinking and problem-solving skills is a very important focus of our Early Years. We also incorporate a strong foundation in Literacy and Numeracy, preparing children to transition to Elementary School. Through a thematic approach to learning children explore and understand the world around them. Teaching incorporates learning opportunities in both social studies and science. Learning is both child and teacher directed and involves close liaison with parents.
Elementary
As an international school, Heritage seeks to encourage its children to respect and become acquainted with the many cultures and traditions represented at the school.
We have adopted The International Primary Curriculum (IPC) which is based on clearly defined learning standards that lay out the subject, personal and international knowledge, skills and understandings children need at different stages of their primary or elementary school life.
International Primary Curriculum (Grades K – 5)
At Heritage, we have adopted the International Primary Curriculum. This curriculum is a comprehensive, thematic, creative curriculum with clear processes and specific learning goals for every subject. It promotes international mindedness and personal learning.
The IPC has been designed to ensure rigorous learning but also to help teachers make all learning exciting, active and meaningful for children. Learning with the IPC takes a global approach, helping children to connect their learning to where they are living now as well as looking at the learning from the perspective of other people in other countries. The IPC is used by schools in more than 80 countries around the world. It allows for great learning, great teaching and great fun.
It covers Science, History, Geography, Communication, Technology, Society, Technology, and some aspects of ICT, Art, Music and P.E.
‘International Mindedness’ is very important for International schools. First, it is an approach that sets out to develop understandings of our similarities in addition to an acceptance of our differences and an ability to live together within those differences.
Second, it is an approach that accepts the need to define the knowledge, skills and understandings which lead to an international mindset as rigorously as it accepts the need to define the learning outcomes for individual curriculum subjects. In doing so, it is an approach which is prepared to put as much energy into focusing on the detail of knowledge and skills as it does on enjoying the pleasure of eventual understanding.
Third, it is an approach which is as much about developing a formal curriculum and supportive systemic curriculum and management structures as it is about creating an emotional and cultural awareness and attachment to international mindedness.
Math
Elementary classes use Singapore Math. “Singapore Math” is a term used to refer to the mathematics curriculum used in Singapore. For over 15 years Singapore has consistently scored at the top of international mathematics comparison studies. Its unique approach to teaching Math – which focuses on problem solving, deep understanding and model drawing – has helped Singapore students excel. Heritage students now have the same opportunity to benefit from this proven curriculum.
English
Our Language Arts Curriculum is North American based and is aligned to the Common Core State Standards. The Common Core State Standards Initiative is a state(USA)-led effort coordinated by the National Governors Association Center for Best Practices (NGA Center) and the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO). The standards were developed in collaboration with teachers, school administrators, and experts, to provide a clear and consistent framework to prepare children for college and the workforce.
Our school uses a Language Program by McGraw-Hill called Reading Wonders. It is a program that helps cater for the needs of our children in an ever changing 21st century. Every week there is a new concept with grade appropriate topics that may also include some aspects of science and social studies that students will cover in IPC.
There are short complex texts that focus on comprehension, strategies and skills, different types of genre, vocabulary strategies and writing texts.
This program allows for differentiation within the classroom and offers leveled readers to cater for the different reading levels within the classroom. It also integrates research and inquiry through short and sustained research projects. During the last week of every unit covered, the focus is on different types of writing.
Finally it allows for weekly assessments, assessment after every unit as well as benchmark assessments to help in the placement of a child.
For our handwriting program, we use the D’Nealian handwriting curriculum which is the original continuous stroke handwriting program. With D’Nealian Handwriting, all students have to learn is a few simple connecting strokes-and they’re writing in cursive! First introduced in 1978, it has become one of the most widely accepted methods for teaching handwriting.

Promotions are recommended at the end of the school year based on student performance. If a student is not eligible for promotion to the next grade, parents will be informed and invited to school to discuss ways forward for their child.
Religious preferences of parents and students are respected by the school, however, all classroom instruction is in the context of the Christian ethos of the school. All students will be required to participate in the religious instruction and activities of the school.
