The Medical Clinical officer program provides students with learning experiences to help develop those skills and attitudes necessary to excel in clinical medicine and community healh. The training for the clinical officers is three years post-secondary school (after completing the Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education or its equivalent as deemed appropriate by regulatory bodies) and is comprised of clinical training at tertiary institutions. The Programme is structured in a way that allows infusion of both theory and practical training activities for students.
The diploma in Clinical Medicine and community health program is completed in six 17 week semesters over three calendar years in which trainees are facilitated in 38 courses with a total of 134 credit units. Students study the biomedical sciences such as Anatomy, Physiology and Biochemistry in the first year followed by patholological subjects such as Microbiology and Pathology and finally clinical subjects (Medicine, Surgery, Pediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynecology) in the third year.
The final year of study involves clinical attachment in various specialty fields of clinical practice that includes clerkships in internal medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynecology as well as paediatrics and child health.
This occurs in KIU teaching hospital and other affiliated Hospitals (Kitagata, Itojo, Bwera and Kilembe Mines), where they rotate in all the departments, receive beside teaching, attend consultants’ ward rounds, clerk patients and present medical cases to other qualified health professionals. They also write prescriptions which at this stage must be counter-signed by a supervising clinician. In addition, there are rotations in other specialty areas that include: ophthalmology, ENT, psychiatry, dermatology and dentistry.
