SCHOLARSHIP FAQS

How are students selected for the Scholarship Fund?
Scholarships are based on character and calling. Africa Renewal Ministries, our parent organization, has an extensive network of churches throughout East Africa. We work with the pastors in our network and other partner networks to select ministers with the outstanding character and a clear calling to receive training at AfRU. Upon graduation students are then sent back to those communities to serve.

What does my donation cover?

92.5% of tuition, room and board. Every student also participates in the many resources and programs at AfRU such as weekly chapels, mentoring groups with AfRU staff, ministry internships, on campus work programs, community days and membership in our alumni association upon graduation

What is expected from students receiving scholarships?

Students receiving scholarships cover 7.5% of the total cost ($50/term). Additionally, students work 10-20 hours per week on campus in the library, computer lab, kitchen, facilities or farm. We have intentionally built in work hours as a way to train up leaders to give back to their communities. Through this program students learn that the “human resource” they are providing is another way that they can give, even though they might be lacking in financial resources.

Can I sponsor a specific student and communicate with them?

We do not encourage a pen pal type relationship between donors and students due to the many cross-cultural miscommunications which can take place such as inappropriate requests for money and gifts. We find that it is best for students to build lifetime mentoring relationships with the AfRU faculty and staff.

However, we do encourage you to consider providing scholarships for your church and ministry partners in East Africa as a means to further support them and their work. Please email vbyamukama@africarenewaluniversity.org, and we will help to ensure that those leaders receive training.

What if I can’t give $100 a month?
Every dollar given to the Scholarship Fund goes directly to student scholarships. Every dollar goes towards helping us to equip the next generation of Christian leaders for Africa!
