Where can I find the Institute of Petroleum Studies-Kampala?
The Institute of Petroleum Studies is located at Plot 6207 Rose Lane Off Tankhill Road, Muyenga, Kampala, Uganda.

What courses do you offer?
We offer both undergraduate and postgraduate courses.

What are the entry requirements for your courses?

How do I apply?
Download and fill the application form then present it together with the following:

  • Certified photocopies of each O and A Level result slips or their equivalent.
  • Three photocopies of Certified Academic Transcript & Certificates (for those pursuing Masters programs)
  • A photocopy of a receipt showing payment of the application fee
  • Three recent passport size photographs
  • A photocopy of an identity card of the previous school/institution or work place for verification.

When completing the online Application Form, do I need to submit a personal statement?
Applying to study a masters course, you will need a personal statement, to indicate your personal objectives and the reasons behind your choice of course of study. However, this is not necessary for applicants intending to pursue bachelors or certificate courses.

What should I write in my personal statement?
The purpose of your personal statement is to give the Course Director some insight into why you wish to follow a particular course of study and how this course will further your career objectives or plans. We wish to hear your views on:

  • Why you wish to study the course
  • How your previous training and work experience (where applicable) have prepared you for this course. If you have professional experience in the field, please outline this, highlighting aspects of your work and  the need for further study.
  • How the course will help you to take forward your career. Please outline what you plan to do after completion of the course.

Keep the word count under 800 words. You should be able to express your views in a few words.

Is there a closing date for applications?
Admissions for each semester close one month prior to the commencement of the semester. There after any new applicants’ are considered for the next intake.

I have applied, when do I expect feedback?
Once you have applied we aim to have a decision to you within four weeksprovided you have sent all your supporting documents. If you have applied online you will receive an email message once the status of your application has changed.

How much are the fees?

Is it possible to visit the school and meet the Course Directors?
Yes, we welcome direct inquiries with our admissions team.Although we do our best to provide most answers on the website. You can arrange to meet a member of the admissions team by calling +256414695610 or please email your specific questions to admissions@ipsk.ac.ug and we will be happy to respond promptly.

How do you judge applications?
In judging applications, we look carefully at your work experience, your academic qualifications and your personal statement indicating why you wish to do the course. Entry is very competitive and we receive alot of qualifying applicants. Your personal statement is therefore key in distinguishing you above the rest.

Can I transfer to the institute?
Students attending any other institution of higher education who wish to join IPSK must seek advice from the Dean of the concerned Department and then apply for a transfer of credits. However, a complete, official transcript from the former college or Institute must be in file in the Director of Academic Affairs office before transfer may be considered.

How much time does the full-time course take?
The Full-time Courses means you will be expected to attend for up to five full days per week over one to two years, according to the specific choice of course. The exact days depend on the course chosen. Masters courses are intensive and involve much private study.

What are the normal study hours?
Teaching times are usually 9.00am -5.00pm. for morning study and 6:00pm – 9:00pm for evening study. There are usually some periods of private study each week, but some days will be full teaching days. Most students will find that they need to complete their reading in their own time outside School hours.

How is the course assessed?
The degree is awarded if you achieve suitable grades in each of three components. The three components are: coursework, formal examinations and a project. The weighting given to these three components is unique to each subject of study.

Is there a reading list for the courses?
General reading lists are sent out to students during the course of the semester. Reading lists for specific courses are not available before the start of the course.
